The International team made a stunning comeback in the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal after being down by 5 points on Day 1. The tide turned on Friday as the Internationals started making putts, with Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im leading the charge by making seven straight birdies in the alternate shot session. Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith also performed well, with Scott sinking a 40-foot birdie putt to take a 2 up lead and closing out their match 5 and 4 over Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala.

Mackenzie Hughes, a captain’s pick by Mike Weir, showcased his putting skills in the foursomes session on Friday. Paired with Corey Conners, Hughes and Conners beat Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau 6 and 4, with Conners being the fourth-best putter of the session. Si Woo Kim and Ben An also secured a victory for the Internationals, with Kim making a clutch 15-foot putt on the 18th hole for a 1 up win. The Internationals gained 16 strokes on the Americans on the greens alone, flipping their 5-point deficit to tie the Presidents Cup.

A hot putter can make a huge difference in match play, especially in alternate-shot play where golfers must work together seamlessly. The Internationals showcased their putting prowess on Friday, with eight of their players finishing as the best putters of the session. In contrast, the Americans struggled on the greens, finishing with eight of the nine worst putters. The turnaround was highlighted by virtually every player on the International team outperforming their best putter, Hughes, who finished as the second-worst putter from their team that day.

The comeback by the Internationals has made the Presidents Cup a thrilling competition in Montreal. With the momentum now on their side, the Internationals have proven that they have the skill and determination to compete against the favored Team USA. The combination of strong putting performances and team cohesion has propelled the Internationals back into contention, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the tournament.
