Golf’s Resilient Return to Pacific Palisades

Genesis Invitational Returns to Riviera: A Resilient Community Welcomes Golf Back Home

There’s something profoundly moving about a community bouncing back. Having spent 35 years covering this tour—and yes, I’ve walked these fairways at Riviera more times than I can count—I can tell you that when the PGA Tour announced the Genesis Invitational was coming home to Pacific Palisades this week, it meant more than just another tournament on the schedule.

One year after the Southern California wildfires caused an estimated $250 billion in damage, Riviera Country Club opens its gates again for the 100th playing of this storied event. That’s not just golf returning. That’s resilience wearing a Footjoy glove.

Why This Matters Beyond the Leaderboard

Look, I’m not one for flowery sentimentalism about sports—I’ve seen too many tournaments to get starry-eyed. But in my three decades around professional golf, I’ve learned that tour events are threads in the fabric of their communities. When Riviera hosts this week, it’s not just about Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy competing for a share of the $20 million purse. It’s about local businesses, hospitality workers, and families in the Palisades who need the economic activity and the psychological lift that comes with a major PGA Tour event returning to normal.

“The signature event returns to its home course at the Riviera Country Club after being relocated to the Torrey Pines Golf Course near San Diego in 2025.”

That relocation last year? Smart move by the tour, no question. You don’t stage a major championship when your host community is in crisis mode. But moving it temporarily also sent a message: we’re coming back. We’re not abandoning you. That matters to people more than most casual fans realize.

The Field is Stacked—As It Should Be

With a limited field of 72 players competing for top honors, the tour has assembled what amounts to a who’s-who of elite golf. We’re talking about Scheffler—who’s playing some of the best golf of his career—alongside Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and the rising star Chris Gotterup.

The winner takes home $4 million. For context, when I started covering this tour in the early ’90s, we were talking about purses where the winner might claim $600,000. The money has changed the game fundamentally, attracting a different caliber of global talent. But what hasn’t changed is the quality of competition at Riviera.

Defending Champions with Different Pedigrees

Ludvig Åberg won last year at Torrey Pines, and before him, Hideki Matsuyama claimed the 2024 title. Having caddied for Tom Lehman back in the ’90s, I’ve seen how different winners bring different narratives to a tournament. Åberg represents the new generation—young, international, hungry. Matsuyama carries the weight of being among golf’s most consistent international competitors. Both will be factors this week, but here’s what strikes me: the Genesis Invitational has evolved into a true meritocracy where experience and youth compete on equal footing.

“The tournament’s past two winners, Ludvig Åberg (2025) and Hideki Matsuyama (2024), will be on hand in what figures to be another exciting four days of golf following Collin Morikawa’s dramatic win Sunday at Pebble Beach.”

Speaking of momentum, Morikawa’s victory at Pebble Beach last Sunday adds another layer of intrigue. The tour is cycling through hot players at just the right moment. That’s the beauty of February golf on the PGA Tour—the season is fresh, everyone is relatively healthy, and the narrative threads are still being written.

The Viewing Experience Has Come a Long Way

Full coverage will be available across ESPN platforms—the ESPN App, ESPN’s streaming hub, and even Disney+. When I started covering the tour, we were grateful if CBS or NBC gave us four hours of weekend coverage. Now fans can watch featured groups, featured holes, and multiple feeds simultaneously. It’s democratized access to professional golf in ways that would have seemed like science fiction 20 years ago.

“Fans can catch all of the action in the ESPN App and in the ESPN streaming hub. First-round coverage is also available on Disney+.”

Looking Forward

Here’s what I take away from this week: the Genesis Invitational returning to Riviera represents more than just a golf tournament finding its way home. It’s a community that experienced devastating loss now hosting the world’s best golfers on one of the game’s most challenging and beautiful courses. The 100-year milestone of this event adds historical weight to the moment.

The tour made the right call relocating last year. And now, it’s making the right call coming back. That’s leadership. That’s understanding that sports aren’t separate from the communities they inhabit—they’re part of the healing process.

Thursday through Sunday at Riviera. Four days of championship golf. One community showing the world what resilience looks like.

As many of you sophisticated, data-driven golfers probably know, the biggest indicator of your scoring potential is how many greens you hit in regulation.
