Scottie Scheffler’s clever application of Local Rule prevents potential disaster

Scottie Scheffler found himself in a tough situation on the 11th hole of the 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, but cleverly used a Local Rule to save his round. The World No. 1 golfer hit a wayward tee shot that ended up 257 yards from the tee box after bouncing off cart paths multiple times. Facing a difficult lie in thick rough, Scheffler used Model Local Rule F-23 to take relief from a Genesis Invitational sign affecting his stance. After a discussion with a rules official, he was able to drop his ball one club-length from the original spot onto a better lie on the tee box.

Scheffler then found that the sign was still impacting his swing, so he took another free drop one club-length away to end up with a perfect lie on a flat portion of the 12th tee box. With his improved lie, Scheffler was able to hit his second shot close to the hole and make a par putt to save his round. The fortunate series of events allowed Scheffler to shoot a 67 for the round, moving him one stroke off the lead heading into the weekend.

As the managing producer for GOLF.com, Kevin Cunningham shared the story of Scheffler’s clever use of the Local Rule to salvage his round at the Genesis Invitational. Despite a difficult lie and multiple obstacles on the 11th hole, Scheffler’s skill and strategic decision-making helped him stay in contention for his first win of the season. The PGA Tour captured the entire sequence on their YouTube page, showcasing Scheffler’s ability to navigate challenging situations on the course.

The use of Local Rules in golf is essential for players to overcome obstacles and challenges during a round. Scheffler’s implementation of Model Local Rule F-23 on the 11th hole highlights the importance of understanding and utilizing these rules to improve one’s position on the course. By taking advantage of the rules available, players can effectively manage difficult lies and situations to maintain their momentum and competitiveness in tournaments.

Scheffler’s performance at the Genesis Invitational demonstrates the strategic thinking and problem-solving skills required to succeed in professional golf. His ability to adapt to challenging circumstances and make smart decisions on the course showcases his talent and experience as a top-ranked player. By leveraging Local Rules and seeking assistance from rules officials when needed, players like Scheffler can enhance their performance and stay in contention for victories on the PGA Tour.

Overall, Scheffler’s experience on the 11th hole at the Genesis Invitational serves as a valuable lesson in utilizing Local Rules to overcome challenges and adversity in golf. As players continue to face obstacles during rounds, understanding the rules and regulations governing the game is crucial for navigating difficult situations and optimizing performance. Scheffler’s success in using the Local Rule to his advantage is a testament to his skill and decision-making under pressure, highlighting the importance of strategic thinking and rule knowledge in professional golf.
