Tiger’s Got One More Masters Run Left in Him

Tiger’s Masters Flirtation: Hope, Realism, and Why We Should Believe Him This Time

After 35 years covering this tour, I’ve learned to read between the lines when Tiger Woods talks about his health. And let me tell you—what he said to Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman at Riviera on Saturday wasn’t the usual non-committal deflection we’ve heard a hundred times before. It was different. More deliberate. More real.

“There is,” Woods responded when asked about playing the Masters. That’s not maybes and ifs. That’s a man who’s genuinely considering it.

The Comeback That Keeps Coming Back

I need to be straight with you: Tiger’s been teasing us about returns for a while now. The 2024 Open at Royal Troon was his last competitive start, and before that, well—the injuries have been relentless. A seventh back surgery in October. A torn Achilles from last March. At 50 years old, most golfers wouldn’t survive one of those setbacks with their game intact, let alone both.

But here’s what separates Tiger from the field, and it’s something I’ve observed firsthand during my time caddying for Tom Lehman back in the ’90s: Tiger’s relationship with pain and adversity is fundamentally different from other competitors. Where most players see an injury as an endpoint, Tiger sees it as a puzzle to solve. Having watched him work through multiple comebacks, I can tell you the intensity and specificity of his rehab is something most fans simply don’t appreciate.

The fact that he’s already hitting full shots again—just months after back surgery number seven—tells me the medical team around him believes this is legitimately different from previous attempts.

Reading the Tea Leaves at Augusta

What strikes me about Tiger’s latest hints is the progression of his language. Earlier in the week, he said an Augusta appearance was “not off the table.” By Saturday, standing there with Nantz and Immelman, he was more affirmative:

“I know I’ll be there… Trev and I are going to be part of a great dinner. I know a lot of people that are playing.”

Now, the Champions Dinner joke is classic Tiger—deflecting with humor while simultaneously confirming his presence at Augusta National. But when he followed that up by admitting he doesn’t know whether he’ll play a tournament before the Masters, suddenly the math gets interesting. Why would he need a prep event if he’s already been working with full swings?

In my experience, that kind of specificity—”regular tour, senior tour, or member-guest”—suggests his team has actually been mapping out scenarios. This isn’t idle speculation. This is contingency planning.

The Senior Tour Wildcard

Here’s something most casual fans miss: Tiger’s casual mention of the Champions Tour carries significant weight. For years, he’s resisted the senior circuit, preferring the PGA Tour’s highest competition. But listen to what he actually said:

“That’s something, as I said, I won’t do out here on this tour because I don’t believe in it. But on the Champions Tour, that’s certainly that opportunity.”

He was referring to playing in a cart—something the Champions Tour permits but the PGA Tour doesn’t. The fact that Tiger is now openly considering a tour where he could manage his Achilles recovery while still competing at a high level? That’s the real story here. It shows his thinking has evolved from “I’ll play competitive golf on my terms” to “I’ll play competitive golf on whatever terms my body requires.”

That’s not a retreat. That’s pragmatism from a man who’s earned it.

Context Matters: The Broader Picture

I’ve covered 15 Masters tournaments in my career, and I’ve never seen the tournament quite as wide-open as it’s shaping up to be. Rory’s still searching for that elusive fifth major. Jon Rahm is finding his footing. The younger generation—Scheffler, McIlroy, Koepka—is hungry. But Tiger at Augusta? That’s a narrative that transcends golf.

There’s also Charlie’s commitment to Florida State to consider. Woods mentioned it was “a very difficult decision” for his son. The guy who’s spent the last three years primarily focused on his recovery now has another dimension to manage—the pride and support of watching his kid pursue the game at the highest amateur level. Sometimes that kind of family milestone lights a different fire.

The Realistic Assessment

Do I think Tiger will play the Masters? I’m 60-40 on it. Yes, he’s hitting full shots. Yes, his tone is more confident. But he’s also 50, dealing with his eighth back issue in various forms, and recovering from a significant Achilles injury. The course demands range of motion and lower-body stability that even young players struggle with.

But here’s what I’m absolutely certain about: if Tiger shows up at Augusta National in April, it won’t be because he’s chasing a miracle. It’ll be because his team believes he can genuinely compete. And that distinction matters enormously.

We’ll know more in a few weeks. Until then, I’m choosing measured optimism over cynicism. After 35 years covering this game, I’ve learned that Tiger’s hints usually come with substance attached.

As many of you sophisticated, data-driven golfers probably know, the biggest indicator of your scoring potential is how many greens you hit in regulation.
